F15 Strike Eagle appearing to hang in mid-air as Space Shuttle Atlantis arcs away

This stunning image shows a F15 Strike Eagle appearing to hang in mid-air as Space Shuttle Atlantis arcs away at more than 1000 mph into the blue Florida sky, and onwards into space.
This incredible picture was taken on May 14th as Atlantis headed to the International Space Station for the final time.

As it left Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, a pair of F15 Strike Eagles patrolled the skies above the launch and one of the pilots was able to capture this one-off frame. Even the shadow of the plume from the launch is picked out on the blue-green of the Atlantic ocean.

The F15s are used to enforce a strict no-fly zone in the area around a shuttle launch. During this launch five other aircraft inadvertently entered the no-fly zone and had to be escorted clear. Sister ships Discovery and Endeavour are scheduled to make their final flights to the space station later this year and then Nasa plans to end its shuttle program.
